General Medicine Q & A

What Is General Medicine?

General medicine, also known as primary care medicine, is the patient's main connection with a medical doctor. The primary care doctor is the main doctor that a patient will visit when they have any kind of health problems or concerns. They address common concerns, help the patient maintain their ongoing health issues, and wbe there for urgent care when it is needed.

What Does General Medicine Include?

General medicine includes virtually all types of illnesses. Common colds, the flu, headaches, strains or sprains, diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other types of illnesses are treated by a general medicine provider. General medicine providers do physical exams, yearly check-ups, lab testing, care for chronic conditions, and more. A general medicine provider often sees patients on an urgent basis, but emergency situations are typically relayed to a hospital. Coho Medical Group offers all of these things, as well as specialized services like narcotic addiction treatment.

What if a Referral is Needed?

While general medicine providers handle the bulk of a patient's care, there may be times that the patient requires certain specialized treatments not available at the medical care facility. For example, a patient who sees the primary care doctor for chest pain may have tests that reveal they are suffering from a serious condition that requires heart surgery. In cases like these, the primary care doctor will refer the patient to a specialist who can perform that type of surgery. After the surgery, the patient would still return to their primary care doctor for all ongoing care. The specialist and the primary care doctor will work as a team to make sure that the patient receives the best care possible
